Donegan A-2028 Aspheric Round Stand Magnifier, 5X Magnification, 60mm Viewing Diameter

Only a few of my art books are physically big enough to see all the details. In particular, I own a dozen or so Taschen paperbacks that have quality reproductions (particularly at the price point) but none of reproductions exceed 9x7 inches (23x18cm) and most are smaller. I often want to see detail more clearly. My 8X loupe is too powerful. It shows paper weave and magnifies too small an area. This stand-mounted magnifier fixes the distance (as opposed to hand-held magnifiers) and magnifies a good-sized area. It is indeed aspheric, hence there is less distortion (barrel or pin-cushion, I always confuse them) at the edges. At this price, I believe the lens should be glass, not plastic. The plastic means it is quite light enough to use lying in bed. The open stand means I can get enough light to see the detail. But the plastic means it will scratch much easier than glass. I would classify the magnification at about 3X (not 5X), though I did no scientific measurement. It is very good for the Taschen books--big enough to see detail but not so big that the paper weave comes into view.
