Review: Yes, it's Far Cry 3.5. And yes, it's Awesome! - (Long Review) Yes, it's very much like FC3 with upgraded graphics, some re-skins and a new story line. Yes, that is very much a good thing! Summary Great: Amazing graphics & audio Excellent acting and animation Awesome player-centric game play Comfortable & responsive controls The new Himalayas setting is captivating and fresh Good: Storyline is intriguing, but not phenomenal A few new weapons, animals, skills, etc but nothing that really jumps out Bad: Well, it is Far Cry. If you don't like Far Cry, then you won't like this game. I don't consider the similarity to FC3 a bad thing, but if you're expecting something totally re-invented, you won't find it here. The predator animals are over-abundant and seem to find you at all the wrong moments. Overall 4.75 / 5 Stars. Specifics Install: This game installed and ran flawlessly from discs. Took about an hour to install on a new Asus ROG G751. Be aware that (Day 1) there is 3 GB patch that will need to be downloaded and installed. Once that was over, fired right up for me. Performance / graphics / audio: I'm a multimedia loving kind of guy. When a game looks & sounds good, it can lock me in and make me forget everything else, but when it doesn't, I find my mind wandering. This game does not disappoint. The Nvidia GTX970M on my system runs this on "NVIDIA" setting (one above Ultra) with all individual settings cranked to ultra flawlessly. This game is BEAUTIFUL. I mean absolutely amazing. Truly a next-gen game clearly built for next-gen systems. Considering that I literally slipped away from reality staring at a 17" screen and lost track of the world around me for several hours, I'd say that "Immersive" is the right word. The only odd thing I noticed is when moving from sunlight to shadow, you get a lot of dimming. I haven't figured out though if it's an issue or another "realism" feature - since that's pretty much the effect you get in real life as your eyes try to adjust to the lower light level. Gameplay: Well, it's Far Cry. Plays like Far Cry 3. All the crafting, abilities, etc are very similar with a few add ons here and there. A couple of new features / modes of travel such as the new grapple hook. Some cool minor improvements, I guess. The thing is, I don't think there was anything broken here that they needed to fix, except - Auto Driving - Yes, they added auto-driving! Now you can focus on shooting instead of driving (which you do quite a bit in this game). This brings me to a major point - this game caters to the player in all the right ways. Auto collecting ammo on walk by, marking a lot of items and loot on the map for you, a solid kb & m control set up out of the box. It really allows you to slip into the game and the story and not worry so much about the little things. Most importantly - they didn't try to fix anything that wasn't broken! Since this released the same day as Dragon Age: Inquisition (and I pre-ordered both), I'm going to use that as an example. DA took a lot of the things that worked and messed them up (dumbed down AI, bad controls, etc). FC4 managed to keep everything that worked and tweak a few things that didn't. No reinventing the wheel, here - they didn't need to. One gripe - there is a LOT of animals. To the point that there interference is almost constant. This may be realistic for being dropped into the Himalayan wilderness, but when predators are attacking and interfering with your time-sensitive missions most of the time, it's too much. They also tend to attack enemies a lot, which can be helpful, but cuts into XP collection (it sucks when you've clipped an enemy a couple of times and you know you're down to the last shot and a freaking eagle swoops down and steals your kill). Story: Voice acting & animation are exactly what you'd expect - exceptional. Same kind of "in your face" interactions as FC3. Truth be told, I've managed to loose focus from the main story - A LOT. And, that is NOT a bad thing! It's one of the things that makes FC so fun. Something like this: ~Strolling along to the next mission > ~Is that a F*n rhinoceros? S***, it is! > ~I wonder if my new sniper rifle will drop that thing with a head shot? > ~Oh no, it didn't! > ~Run like H*** > ~Hey, is that a cave over there? > ~(45 minutes later) Oh, yeah. I should go get back to that mission. And all the while, never feeling like you wasted your time. Like any good FPS/RPG hybrid, the story is not isolated to the main quest line. There is a ton to see and learn. Maybe not so deep as DA or TES, but probably on par with Mass Effect and better than most FPS games. That said, so far, I think that the story line in FC3 was more engrossing. I remember ending the prologue feeling like I'd just been sucker punched in the gut and had to regain my breath. I haven't quite gotten that from FC4, yet, but it's early and time will tell... (will update later). Multiplayer: [Updated 11/21] Once you get through the first Chapter, you open up multiplayer. So far I've been successful 0/5 for entering a match online in game and successful 1/2 from the main menu (opening screen). Once in, it seems to work well. Everything operates as smoothly as single player mode. If they get the servers straightened out, then I'd call this a success. Until then, this is an obvious FAIL. Will update as I continue dump hours upon hours of my life into this...
Review: Fun game but..... - Fun game. Graphics are superb and amazing on my 144hz LED monitor! My you tube channel that shows the game play. Bear in mind I recorded at a lesser frame rate and resolution so it wouldn't take ages to upload. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_nQjYOMkLlXAyRr1tRfdyQ/playlists Pros: 1. Great graphics!!! I'm running an 8GB Card so it can take all settings max on 1080p. 2. Fun style of play. Easy learning and feel. 3. World is huge and I mean huge! They give you excellent modes of transportation. I barely use quick travel. 4. The story is a bit bizarre but once you get involved it's fun. I love stealth. 5. Customize game play. It lets you disable and enable a wide variety of options. Cons: 1. Night time is way to short! I like to do my jobs at night and its not very realistically dark like Far Cry 2 and it only lasts for around 10-15 minutes. 2. No weather affects unless you call wind a weather affect! One of my favorite thing was storms in Far Cry 2. This game, not one! 3. No multiple save options in campaign mode. Sometimes I like to save a new slot so I can go back later. Nope not this time. 4. No option to make it virtually impossible to beat. I like games that ramp up the difficulty. This only has 3 options, easy medium and hard. Where's infamous! When I get hit I want to get hit not feel like something annoying is shooting at me. 5. Check out the screen shot. It has some graphic issues but not much. All and all this game fun to play and has great game play but it's the little things that matter to me. I figured Ubisoft would at least put weather in the mix. The night affects being shortened really put me in a downer mode. Very disappointing with that. As being a long fan of the Far Cry series, I believe this was made mainly for graphics and not for the true Far Cry fans who enjoy the realism. If your looking for a visually stunning game then buy it. If your into more realism type of game, I would say buy it too because than your giving them money to make the next Far Cry hopefully more realistic all around. Either way is a win win for me:) ***UPDATE*** 09-09-2015 So I completed the game and went back and played Far Cry 3. Wow this game is a major upgrade compared to Far Cry 3. I changed my rating to 5 stars because of this. It's a lot more smoother and lot better graphics. Also it seems more realistic and has better stealth options. The pros outweigh the cons in this title based off of previous games.
