Panda! Go Panda! [DVD]

Perfect quirky animated show. Love it.
All the family go mad for this dvd. It's two episodes on one disk, we broke our last dvd (maybe wore it out) so this was a replacement. If you like studio ghibli films, Japanese animation or pandas you may love this.A young girl stays behind to stay at school while her grandma goes away, she is full of fun and adventure and meets a daddy panda and his son who are looking for a new home.In ep. 2 the little girl, baby panda and papa panda find a circus has come to town and meet some new friends.I especially recommend for ages 2-6 but my 8 yr old sometimes still watches too.

Very cute Studio Gibli (Miyazaki) classic - perfect for little ones (without all the crazy action)
Love this! Perfect for a three year old. Not as much action and flashing lights in front of the screen. Cute story line, and creative characters. Predates Totoro.

Not Totoro but entertaining
This was Miyazaki's first work before Totoro, two pilot episodes for a kids TV series that never happened. You probably would not be watching it if it wasn't for the Studio Ghibli connection but that does not mean it is bad, more that it has lower production values and aimed at a younger audience. Its particularly interesting to look at it in relation to Totoro as there are elements of the story that show a direct influence on the genesis of Totoro. I enjoyed it!

Mimiko Go Mimiko!
Though showing its early seventies origins in the animation this still looks beautifull with full rich colours and characters that instantly remind of later Studio Ghilbi. Mimiko is very reminicent of Ponyo in the look and personality of the character and is not abandoned or left on her own but packs her reluctant granmother of on a train to attend a memorial service in the first scenes then narates the story in letters to her. The second story starts out like the three bears then again reminds of Ponyo depicting a flooded underwater world, all great fun for children and adult fans of classic anime.

Fun cartoon for little kids
This DVD was a great hit here. The kids love the lovable panda story.

yes really panda go panda
this a brillant anime with lots fun and sillyness it is in two shot features both as good as each other. fun tale for kids and for adults with the brillant papa panda who is much rather eating the bambo ( "the bambo is very nice" ) than doing anthing he will make you laugh again and again papa panda is the best comedy in this. it loving and wonderful piece of hayao miyazaki genius that you can see other pieses of work through it as well.

What a disappointment!
First of all, I'll say that this would be wonderful for very young children - the caveat I have to include in the review is that if you're making the purchase for someone 6 years old or younger, I'd bump it up to 5 stars, this is absolutely ideal. The thing is, I'm a good deal older than 6, myself - and while that's never dampened my appreciation for Miyazaki's work on any other occasion (I consider My Neighbour Totoro, to which this is often compared, one of the finest films ever made) in the case of this series, it just doesn't hold any appeal. Of course, the animation is nowhere near as lush and detailed - but beyond that, it has none of the characterisation or compelling storytelling, it isn't imbued with the sense of wonder, or hold any of those moments of perfectly balanced tension which you find in the rest of his work... In short, it lacks depth and artistry. What's more, you don't really get much for your money... I'm surprised to see the run time is listed at 70 minutes, much as it did drag on I guessed that the 2 episodes were only about 25 mins each... In any case, when it's only a pound more for all 97 wonderful minutes of the captivating, unusual, exquisite Ponyo [DVD] [2008 ] you can't help but feel you're not getting your money's worth. On the positive side, for all it's faults, it still manages to be quite endearing (perhaps that's the sign of Miyazaki's magic touch...) and, as I said - for little kids, the bright, bold animation, the cute characters, the spunky little girl & the bumbling buffoon papa will go down really, very well indeed. I look forward to getting it out when I have my own, because compared to most other cartoons you might stick on for the kids, it's endearing, charming and quirky. However, compared to everything else from Miyazaki, it's a dull, disposable offering.

Pandas!
This is a goofy movie. I first saw it late at night at an anime convention as a teenager, and had I been given any food or drink by strangers I would have thought I had been drugged. This movie is a little on the bizarre side. That being said, when I had a child and he got to an age where he could watch movies, this is one of the first titles I bought. I love Miyazaki. This is a great film for young kids. It doesn't teach any obnoxious lessons, it is pure entertainment, and as it is two films, it can be broken up so your child isn't vegging out in front of the TV as long. Also, my son was irrationally obsessed with trains when I bought this, so part two with the amazing unstoppable train was a huge hit. I like this film, and none of the voice acting is as annoying as say, Mei from Totoro.

Adorable!
Le premier Miyazaki, une perle!! Un dessin animé pour les plus petits mais aussi avec une seconde lecture pas déplaisante pour les adultes fans du genre et de l'auteur!

Such a classic and my kids lived it.
I got to watch it again after not seeing this movie for 16 years. I had watched it Japanese dub with English subs at the time so it was interesting to watch it in English Dub as well this time. My kids love pandas so they thought it was a good movie and like to dance to the theme song.
