Completely out of date - should be retired
Talks about the danger of losing data on floppy disks. Or setting up routing on Windows NT or Novell Netware (!!) Latest client operating system mentioned is Windows XP. In other words its OLD and OUT OF DATE. The author still trying to sell it for $50! What a rip off. And to top it off, its not that well written. Thank god I only 'rented' the kindle version and didn't buy it. Still a waste of money though. Did I mention, its a rip off?

Just what I needed
I fell into the category of "I know what a router is but I hope I never have to set one up." Our routers were handled by another talented memeber of our team. When she left, I gave it shot using some manuals we had from cisco and some other informatin passed down from project to project. Completely lost, I decided to start from the beginning. This text was just the ticket to get me started!

A Highly Recommended Reference
I highly recommend "Firewalls" by John Vacca. I found the book to be extremely helpfully in understanding the configuration and maintenance of firewalls as well as a great reference for the different types of security infrastructures that can be implemented using the technologies available today. "Firewalls" is an excellent knowledge base that I would recommend as a must read for anyone in the computer security and system administration fields.

Excellent resource for firewall design and deployment
I am a computer security instructor by trade, and I constantly make reference to Mr. Vacca's books during ethical hacking, countermeasures, and digital forensics classes. This book is particularly helpful in that it is, for the most part, vendor neutral in approach. The most current trends and techniques for firewalling and filtering are covered, including deep content inspection, "stateful" application examination, and intrusion detection system integration. The inclusion of VPN technology and client integration is helpful, and makes mention of the most current trends in the VPN arena (STUN, NAT traversal, etc); Chapter 14 covers the internal network segment as opposed to perimeter security devices, and offers several tips for "defense in depth" layering strategies; Chapter 19 offers several key tips for firewall management from an enterprise perspective, a glaring omission from other firewall-related books. One of the great things about Vacca's work is his penchant for documenting references - any of the research materials he used or discovered during the book's development is included at the end of each chapter.

Importance of Firewalls
This book is an excellent resource for network and system administrators. Firewalls are increasingly important to safeguard company intranets as well as home computers from malicious hackers. This book emphasizes the need to review the firewall traffic logs and constantly audit the firewall performance. It reminds us all of the methods required to maintain a safe computer network.
