Q: will this accomodate a 300 pound person?

I'm not sure about 300, but it was not at all a problem for a 230 lb person. It is very sturdy and I would guess it would work for 300 lbs.

Q: how well does it handle odors

Lets put it this way. I let a friend borrow my boat. Its in the cabin. They forgot to empty it. So at the end of summer when I got home I stepped into my boat and never knew it was holding toxic waste. If you know what I mean. I never smell anything except on the flush.

Q: I've never owned one of these toilets, how do you actually empty it? Do you have to dump it at a dump station or can you dump it in a home toilet ?

We use ours at our cabin so we mix water and holding tank chemicals. We empty ours at a local RV dump station. As to what your state and/or city ordinances are regarding using a home toilet to dispose of your porta-potty waste one would have to check. We like this toilet. For two of us, it takes approx. six days to fill it. This porta-potty is very easy to use. Easy to clean and to empty. The holding tank does get heavy (which is expected). We transport the holding tank (bottom portion) in a plastic storage bin with a snap on top. It helps to keep it clean and if by chance it did leak the leak would be contained. To separate the top from the bottom there are two latches (one of both sides) Just make sure the bowl is emptied and closed. Than pull up on the side latches and lift up and the top comes off. Now one is ready to take the bottom (holding tank) to dispose of according to state/local laws.

Q: I am new to camping portapotties. I have noticed reviews of other models and a consistent complaint of the tank pressurizing, causing "blowback"

I live at about 2800 feet elevation and have taken it to Pismo Beach two times. The flushing seal is so tight that bottom part expands and does build up pressure when going home. I dump and clean mine, and leave the flushing valve open a little, so this cannot happen.
