Misery when attempting to pair with Samsung smart TV
I am a huge fan of KEF having owned monitor speakers of theirs in the past, so rather than trying to audition many different soundbars I chose this one because of the reputation of KEF and apparent ease of connection. I bought it to go with the Samsung 6200 55" smart TV which I also just bought. The upside is that the soundbar does work beautifully when playing blue ray DVDs; connected to my subwoofer it is home-theater like without lots of messy connections and taking up hardly any space. The sound quality is excellent, as I had hoped for. But I am miserable and the soundbar is back in its packaging awaiting return to Amazon. The downside is that it won't work with any other input than DVD: when playing Netflix or Amazon Prime through the wireless network on the smart TV there is no sound with the soundbar attached. (note: I did not test cable inputs as we don't have cable). At first I thought that I could live with this by switching back to the TV internal speakers for those sources even though the sound would be worse, but with the soundbar connected by HDMI link the TV won't let you change back to its internal speaker without running a diagnostic program through multiple menus! I also tried the optical link and that (sometimes) delivers sound from all sources but that was not a solution because with the TV internal speakers turned off the volume control to the KEF soundbar did not work, and you can't leave the internal TV speakers on because then both they and the soundbar are active with slightly different time delays causing an echo effect. I spent an hour with the Samsung live chat people and they could not find a way around this; I am a technical geek so I really did give it a fair test. I also sent a request for feedback to KEF support 2 days ago and haven't received a reply, so it is equally possible that the device itself is defective, I don't know. So perhaps if your TV isn't smart or perhaps for a different brand or model, this would be a great product, but when coupled with the TV I have the devices appear to compete to prove who is smarter - and both lose.
