The future for a 'wild child'
Nell (Jodie Foster) is a 'wild child'. She's been living alone with her mother in a small cabin in the wonderful Smoky Mountains. The local doctor (Liam Neeson) and the local police officer discover her after her mother's death. Nobody understands her speech and she lives in 'rough' conditions. Dr Paula Olsen (Natasha Richardson) is a university doctor who Dr Jerome Lovell asks for help. The interest showed by Dr Olsen results in the possibility for her of studying Nell, taking her custody. Does Nell really need a custody? Half of the film debates the question, with different insights into both doctors' problems and a caring twist at the end. Definitely an undervalued film.

one of the most moving and emotional films ive ever seen
i watched this film last night and i think its one of the best films i have ever seen in my entire life. its stars jodi foster as nell, a young woman who has been kept completly isolated from the world and everyone in it by her mother, kept in a log cabin deep in the woods on the mountain, she sleeps during the day, in case she is seen, aand only ventures out in to the woods at nightthis film has a run time of one hour and 48 minutes and its the most moving and thrilling time ive spent in ages, before buying this dvd i had never really heard of the film i just happened to be flicking around on amazon and it came up in my recomendations and am i ever glad i bought itnell is the result of her mothers rape, her mother who became a hermit trying to keep her contact with people to an absolute minimum kept nell a secret to protect her maybe thinking that she may be attacked to, nell who was actually one of twins, her sister dying sometime between 6 and 10 years of age only speaks a language noone at first can understand, a language partly developed between her and her twin, and partly through her mothers speech impediment caused by repeated strokesafter the death of her by then elderly mother the sherief and doctor discover her existance, the doctor invites another doctor, paula to consult on her, her boss at the hospital want her, nell, commited to a loony bin so they can study her, but jerry, liam neeson, insists that she should be kept in her own enviroment and both doctors camp in the local enviroments and gradually befriend nell and begin to learn her languageduring three months they earn her trust and become drawn to this strange yet happy young woman, after her existance as a wild woman is broken in the press she is taken to the pysch ward of the hospital where she suffers a breakdown and is rescued and taken away by jerrywhile attending a commital hearing in court nell begins to speak again and is eventually allowed to return to her mountains and her wood and helps others include mary the sherrifs wife deal with her own emotion al problemsthis film is so hard to describe in words and needs to be seen, its such an emotional film and so moving i dont think i will ever forget and know its a keeper, i know i will enjoy it over and over again, its one of those films where you find something new every time you view it

A tour de force of sensitive acting skill and direction
I bought the DVD of this film, which I was completely unaware of, because of the previous excellent review.Jodie Foster's performance as Nell made an almost incredible character totally believable. How she didn't get an oscar for her performance says more about the oscars than about the enormous range and empathy of this superb actress. She was assisted by a wonderful complementary and vulnerable performance from Liam Neesom and the sensitive exploration of a very difficult subject by Michael Apted. I found myself crying without immediately understanding why. I then realised that the film had plumbed the depths of my humanity to levels I did not realise existed. It confronted the question of what it is to be a fully individual human being going beyond our place in a so called civilised society to our almost instinctive spiritual responses to the natural world and to relationship. This is a truly deep and rewarding film which deserves a wide audience. My only criticism is that the transition to Nell's independence was hurried towards the end in the interests of dramatic denouement.
