Applications that a practical and functional.
Anslow has put in the work in developing this series of books. He’s done a great job in presenting a practical interpretation of applying the movements in the TKD patterns, so that any decent practitioner can understand them. I own several of Stuart’s Instructional books - all well worth the money and the time!Eddie Minyard, 9th Dan

Highly informative - good format
This work is very informative and can be used as inspiration for bringing back real-life applications in the lesson. The writer started from a list of aggression forms and formulated plausible counters. This reminds me somewhat of the formulation of techniques in American Kenpo Karate (Master Ed Parker & Master Al Tracy). This book comes from the same publishing house as the previous books by the same writer. Hence the typesetting, page arrangement etc... are very uniform and familiar and made me feel 'at home' straight away. This volume is a highly valuable addition to the writer's already impressive list of published works on Ch'ang Hon Taekwon - Do.

Grain of salt
While some of these defenses are effective some were clearly not pressure tested against a knowledgeable opponent.

Another essential purchase
Stuart Anslow has once again produced a must have book - especially suited to Taekwon-Do (ITF/Chang-Hon in particular as those pattern sets are referred to where the movements occur) but the information contained within will be of use to anybody. If you have purchased any of the authors previous pattern encyclopedia or real applications books (do so if you haven't!) then the format of the book will be familiar, the photographs are clear and the flow of the movements are easy to follow with excellent explanation text to support. The author has referenced the "Habitual Acts Of Violence" which is a widely accepted list of the most likely attacks that happen in the real world, the defences are then organised into sections to deal with each HAOV with several options throughout. In addition tips are given as to how to integrate this into your classes or practice in order to supplement (or replace) your existing self defence/Ho Sin Sul techniques to make them more effective for use.A great book.

Great theory but ineffective technique.
This book has pictures that are too small, without enough contrast, to be useful. The author has attempted to record Hosinsul techniques, but I believe will lead to ineffective self defense. All theory and advice is very useful, and should be applied with different techniques.

Essential TKD Self Defence Book
Fantastic book detailing techniques, responses and methods used against Habitual Acts Of Violence. Many techniques are gleaned straight from TKD Patterns and display the comprehensive martial art form that is Tae Kwon-Do.The book also explains how to train for self defence and explains different types of sparring.Even if you believe that the pattern applications don’t have anything more to them than General Choi detailed, this will be a valuable book for your Hosinsul training.

Well worth it.
Quite unusual for a Taekwon-Do book to cover self defence from non MA attacks, but this one does. It does relate defences to movements but it would be strange if it didn't. There's lots of alternative defences to common attacks, together with explanations of precursors, fences and the like. Although the target demographic is the TKD community, it's well worth a read for any martial artist. Lots to read and practice, something for everyone.
