Q: How quickly does it use up the batteries?

I can not answer this question as I returned this item because it was not as described by the seller the only heating element is in the back of the neck, the only heat for the hands is proved by the hands themselves. I would not recommend buying this item. Colin Walters.

Q: Is the heating element covering all of the scarf or a small area?

It covers a roughly 6 inch squares patch in the middle to warm the back of your neck. Does work well not too hot but good on a bitter day.
