How many people have asked (or heard asked) a mother with kids--Do you work? As in, if you're not working outside the household for wages, you're not really working. Real work matters, reproductive labor does not. (And reproduction doesn't just involve the act of giving birth, it includes all the unpaid household and care labor that goes into caring for the young, the old, the sick.) Briggs does a tremendous job up-ending this distinction, and shows how reproductive labor is not just real labor, but a crucial element of politics, from welfare "reform," to policing to abortion to immigration.

This is such a great book. The author argues that so many of our national political debates really are fundamentally family issues. I’m no academic, and this is very readable for anyone concerned about the issues that affect us intimately. It will resonate with anyone who’s ever wanted to pursue a career, have kids, make a family, or live in a decent community. I would definitely recommend this book.

I really like this book and it is captivating to read. I do feel like it was rushed to print and some of the Trump election stuff was speculative. You can can tell that from what's actually happened.

This is a really important read, especially in light of what's happening politically around reproductive rights. It's important to understand the history of how something (women's bodies, our family planning, etc.) have become politicized. It puts the current events into a larger context.

This was a great view of the relevant history and systematic processes as we begin to think about reproductive rights in more of a reproductive justice framework that encompasses our reproductive lives more fully! Loved it.

Her take on reproductive politics is brilliant and long overdue. The greed of our bought politicians from both major parties in succumbing to big money every time for decades has ruined balanced good faith at so many levels that the prospects for the future governance of our precious republic are precarious.

Very informative about history of US policy on reproductive rights. Think about Kissinger influence on US policy.
