A Great Value For Travel - With A Few Improvements It Could be Perfect
I wanted a small, lightweight radio that would work as a travel alarm and not add much weight to my bags when I travel. I tried another manufacturer's radio, but there were too many compromises in the construction and features of that product, so I returned it. This Kaito product shows Kaito's experience in designing radios that people can really use. It is very small and lightweight. It also has more quality and heft in its build than the competition. I like how easy it is to change the clock and alarm times, and also that the volume can be dialed comfortably low when listening to the radio using earbuds - unlike the competitor's product I returned. The antenna is a little longer than the competitor's product, and it seems sturdy for its size. The radio receives strong FM stations very clearly, although not in stereo. The weaker stations are not received as clearly, but that is to be expected for a radio of this size.I also like that the alarm can be set to use a beeping sound or the radio. However, there is one aspect of the alarm on the KA220W that I would like to see changed a bit - although I am aware that most people probably will prefer this feature to remain as it is. The problem for me is that the alarm sound - whether using the beeping or the radio - always increases in volume rapidly within just a few seconds to maximum volume. The instructions say this is intentional, and it probably works well for most people, who need a loud alarm even when they normally listen to the radio at a lower volume level. For me, though, I would prefer to be able to set the volume on the alarm sound - either the beeping or the radio - by myself to reduce the volume. I would also prefer that the volume not increase when the alarm sounds - because I don't need maximum volume to wake up, and I am afraid the loudness of the beeping or radio will disturb people in hotel rooms next to mine.Aside from the one issue above, it would also be nice to be able to set the radio to remember my favorite local radio stations as "presets" into memory that can be recalled with the touch of a button. The lack of presets is not a big problem for my use of the product as a travel alarm, though, so this is not a major drawback of the product for me.In all, the KA220W is a unique product that is the best mini travel radio available, in my opinion. At this price, I recommend it highly if you are looking for a small travel radio with an alarm, or just a radio that is easy to carry with you as you are out and about on a typical day.

Decent small radio-alarm clock
This small pocket radio from Kaito could serve as a very good travel companion. The beeper alarm is a standout feature because it is much louder than the alarms on other small radios, and the alarm is also easy and fairly intuitive to set and adjust. This radio does not cost any more than an alarm clock, so even someone who bought it just to use as an alarm only would be getting a good deal.Radio performance is acceptable but not great. AM and FM reception is a few notches below that of the Grundig Eton Mini Compact - a radio that’s a little bigger and more expensive than this one, but which is similarly pocketable so it might be that many would compare the Grundig Eton to this Kaito. The Kaito is fine for local and stronger regional signals, but if good reception (especially on FM) is important, consider spending the extra $10 or so on the Grundig Eton. However the Grundig Eton does not have a beeper alarm (alarm is via the radio only). Personally I prefer a beeper alarm because it allows you to use the radio both while in bed falling asleep and to wake up the next morning. (If the wake up is by radio alone, you can’t usually use the sleep timer to fall asleep to the radio, as the volume level you prefer while falling asleep to the radio at night might be too low to wake you up in the morning, unless you are a very light sleeper.)The display on the Kaito is well-lighted, big, and easy to read. Tuning, setting the clock, and most other features are operated via buttons on the front. Volume is controlled with a thumb wheel on the side. Sound quality is somewhat tinny, but not bad given this radio’s size and price. All in all this isn’t a bad radio for the money as long as you do not need to receive distant stations. And, the alarm feature is very well implemented. Think of this as a good travel alarm clock with a halfway decent radio thrown in for free.

Poor AM reception
I was very disappointed with the AM reception on this radio. It received only two stations when another similarly priced pocket radio I have pulled in 22 strong signals. That is unacceptable. The FM reception was better, provided you have the antenna extended, but since my main purpose in buying this extremely portable radio was to listen to AM on the go, I will be returning it.

Needs a few tweaks to make it perfect.
The new Kaito KA220W digital AM FM portable radio comes in a sleek & slim package. An interesting radio with a quite a few features that may be on your short list.Search my name and model number on youtube for an in depth video presentation.Features that I like about this radio:* Large LCD Display.* Decent FM reception.* Decent AM reception.* 24 Clock.* Alarm by radio or buzzer.* Nice, strong side lighting on LCD.* Easy to use.* Solid construction.* Sleep Function.* Smooth volume control.Features that could be added or improved on:* Relocate the volume control from the side to the top and recess it.* Add preset memories. Even ten on each band would be great.* Add Stereo reception on the FM band.Overall, this radio is a maybe purchase. It is a great form factor that still needs a few tweaks to make it perfect.

Didn't last long
I bought Kaito KA220W about 10 month ago and after about 6 months I've noticed that the sensitivity on FM decreased to the point that I had to pull out the antenna even for the strong stations. As of this time, even antenna doesn't help - FM is completely dead, I can hear only static. AM still kind of works but even the strong stations are not free from static. I handled the radio quite carefully, never dropped it and it's just perplexing that the functionality deteriorated so quickly. It seems like some electronic component went bad.

Mini Radio portable KAITO
