I whelp litters for rescues, and the mama dogs that come in always have heavy wormload. Hooks, whips, rounds, lungworm and tapeworms…and, they pass it to their puppies.Panacur is safe to give in pregnant and lactating mothers, and in very young puppies. This is invaluable, as so much is limited. Young puppies are very fragile. I can do a 5 day course on both mom and puppies without issue, and it’s very effective. Diarrhea will resolve almost immediately. One of my nana dogs had a very heavy hookworm load (as well as heartworm, and alll the other parasites). It was causing pain and pervasive blood in her stool, resulting in anorexia. Took three, five day courses, but without panacur, it would have been almost impossible to treat. We were beginning to worry she had a medication resistant hookworm infection, as she was also getting monthly deworming treatment with her heartworm (the “plus” in heartworm medications)Many people have told me that they sprinkle the granules on food and their dog eats it easily. This has never worked for me. Since I work with giant breed dogs, and there are LOTS of granules, using a syringe to squirt in their mouths is only effective for their tiny puppies. Even then, much spitting and protestations occur. It just doesn’t taste good, at least for any of my dogs (and that has been dozens of fosters). Even hiding it in eg meatballs has made even the most eager eaters to turn up their nose. So, here’s my tip: use just enough water in the paste to create a formed ball. It’s almost like kneaded bread dough - not sticky at all. . It does not take much water.. Then open their mouth from the side of their mouth by sliding one’s fingers in, and then quickly put the ball in the back of the throat, on the side, over the rise of their tongue, so they cannot spit it out. Then they swallow it without tasting it, and they get the full dose.My vet always has me give 5 days for heavy infestations, but for non rescue dogs with a sudden infection, perhaps picked up at daycare, 3 days is more typical. Do what your vet recommends, and get enough for full daily doses.Panacur is a base supply in my rescue healthcare toolkit. It’s super safe, it’s effective.
