16 years ago my newborn developed an infection in her belly button. Worried about her having a reaction to antibiotics at such a young age we took her to a wholistic doctor that recommended using Goldenseal applied topically twice daily. This took faith and was the first time I used natural product to treat what could be a serious issue.I'm not a doctor and am not giving medical advice. Only telling you that we were so amazed by how well this worked to clear up her infection and promote her stump drying up. We've not used it dozens of times and keep it in the medicine cabinet.Obviously if you have an infection inside of the body like an ear infection etc you need pharmaceuticals. However, it's ignorant to think that through all of history people had no way to treat topical infections before antibiotics. Besides that, these Petroleum based topical ointments are not as healthy as they are sold off as being. One important factor is that you often want to keep Dermatological wounds clean and dry. There really are not a lot of options sold in stores to do that. We've used this product on all kinds of scrapes and lacerations on our kids and animals and have always found fast healing rate with no bad side effects. My favorite use has been on my newborns cord stump. It is so so hard to keep that area dry because diapers tend to lay over it. I toss a baggy of these capsules in with the diaper basket or bag and just open one op and pour 1/2 the powder onto their belly button at each diaper changing. In less than a week the stump dries up and falls off! It's great for scalp injuries where you can't put a moist product on the injury. One child had a sore moist spot in their armpit when they were a baby during a hot summer. It could have turned yeasty real quick. We applied goldenseal and in 5 days it was gone! Again you can't use moist products on stuff like that.It's easy to research the history online and find your own uses.We are having a baby any day and I'm glad to be able to toss this bottle into our hospital bag and check "cord care" off of our birth plan.

Many decades ago, I moved away from home, to the beautiful town of Boulder. I was alone, homesick, and must have been stressed. I had terrible stomach pain that had gone on for a week or so. There I met John, an herbalist, and he recommended I take goldenseal. Needless to say, this altered the course of my life. Within one day I felt relief and a couple of days later, my stomach had righted itself. I delved ever deeper into herbs, scratch cooking, whole food, yoga, natural products, fermenting, etc. I’m still live this way, all these years later, and I still love my goldenseal.As always, conversation, not advice.Peace out, baby <3

I’ve had golden seal before back in the early 2000’s and the root the plant had that distinctive smell, that’s how you know it the real thing.I will continue to buy the NOW brand, it works well for me.

Goldenseal is a great locally acting antibiotic and a mild immune stimulant but shouldn't be used for Long periods because it can cause malabsorption of B vitamins. It is very drying to the mucous membranes and is very helpful after an acute infection and there's lingering stagnation in the respiratory or digestive mucous membranes. This is a great supplement but each person should do their own research or consult a Naturopath.
