Perfect for the Average Backyard!
Verena's husband, again. My wife and other relatives bought these for my birthday, to go along with the nice, new amp/receiver she gave me. She ordered a pair with neither of us knowing much about them, outside of the budget price, passive design (they need to be wired to a separate amp), and weather resistance. Well, we won the jackpot. These are the perfect speakers for our medium-small backyard and pool, for they deliver a nicely balanced sound. The bass response is acceptable (though as of this revision some months later, I have added a 10" subwoofer, protected by a fitted, weatherproof fabric cover). The midranges, where most of the music occurs, are strong and clear. The high frequencies are sufficient to clarify a singer's words, and to convey the percussion well. Keep in mind that details can be lost in the open air, but the Duals seem to manage this limitation as well or better than others near their pricepoint. Sure, a set of Paradigms, Bowers and Wilkinses, or Klipsches likely will carry further, but at a much higher cost. (Even Polks are more costly.) Or, if one really hates his/her neighbors, s/he can rent a DJ, whose gigantic PA speakers will awaken, besides the dead, any sleepers within a four-mile radius! My suggestion: Stick with these ; they're sensible, mountable (against a wall or under the eaves), and very affordable. Plus, they sound great !! // One suggestion for best sound: The instructions recommend mounting the speakers at least 5-1/2 feet for optimal stereo separation. I also mught suggest that if it is necessary to set or mount them on their sides, the midrange and tweeter will sound best on the outsides. Our ears localize the higher sounds better than the lower, so the phrasing and separation will be optimized. I recommend their placement to be no more than ten feet apart. Too much distance between stereo speakers can cause an unbalanced sound. // Once you have completed the easy process of placing and aiming these Duals, just sit back and responsibly enjoy the great (musical) outdoors!

Premium sound quality without the premium price
Summary: I recommend these to anyone looking for a speaker that is durable, provides excellent sound quality, and doesn't drain the bank account.Details: I just upgraded my patio sound system. This included upgrading my speakers from the Dual Electronics LU43PB to these, the Dual Electronics LU53PBs. The sound quality of the LU53PBs is amazing for its price, with sparkling highs and great bass response. I have compared these to speakers that cost four to five times more and the sound quality is just as good.I upgraded to the newer version in large part due to the performance of the first set. The LU43PBs took four years of sweltering Texas summers and winter ice storms in stride, and this was with no special care from me. When I received the new speakers, the improvement in build materials was obvious. I expect these to last even longer.Keep in mind these speakers are rated as 'weather resistant' and not 'water-proof'. They do need a bit of shelter such as under a roof eve or patio. If you want to mount them where they are exposed to the elements you should store them when not in use or protect them with a speaker cover. I purchased covers for the new speakers based on my experience with the first set of speakers. They still worked, but looked a bit rough, with rust starting to appear on the speaker grills. The installation is straight forward: two screws to hold the speaker bracket and two screw knobs to hold the speaker. They can be mounted on a vertical surface, such as a wall or post, or horizontally from the ceiling or on a deck rail. And of course, run the wire to the speaker.I am powering the speakers with a bluetooth power amp I purchased from Amazon as well, the Fosi Audio BT30D Pro. It has more than enough power to cleanly drive these speakers to neighborhood noise complaint levels. ;-)

Home theater rear surround
I bought these because I needed rear surround speakers that I could mount on an already finished indoor wall. For this purpose they are absolutely perfect. I bought the larger size and am so happy I did because am satisfied with the frequency response. To be fair, it is part of a home theater setup so the sound is properly complemented with a subwoofer. I am using a Yamaha RX-V383BL receiver, which auto-tunes equalizer, balance, and fade on each speaker to compensate for room accoustics. Still, when I turn my subwoofer off to ease the subsonics late at night I have no complaints about these speakers. I did remove a star because I received a defective unit and had to send the first pair back. The screw anchors that are built into the speakers are mounted in plastic, and one screw that connected the speaker to the hanging mount was defective, with decorative plastic dripped and solidified partially over the threads. Because of the plastic the screw could not fully tighten, so the mount was free to rattle against the speaker. To make matters worse, the anchor broke in the speaker became able to spin, but would not pull out. Therefore, I could not remove the screw that held the bracket on. I had to break the bracket in order to get the speaker off the wall to return it, and was worried about damaging my wall. The new pair, however, had no defects and sounds wonderful as part of a home theater group, providing crisp, clear sound and frequency response over a wide range of volume.

Nice quality
I ordered these speakers for our patio and pool area. They are a typical speaker wire install. The speakers and brackets were made very well. I installed them in weather protected areas. However, we have incredibly hot west sun that hits joth speakers for a few hours each day. I was surprised they haven't faded. The sound is great from both. The price is good for such a good quality product. Definitely happy with my purchase.

Get amplifier and speaker wires!
Works very well and has amazing bass but don't forget to get the 14 gauge speaker wires and an amplifier that can handle up to 300 watts and 4 ohns at least. Very easy to install and very worth the price.
