how well will they fit in a 1inch by 1 inch square?

They are, mostly, proper size for "large-sized" miniatures. As in, in a 1 inch grid system, they would, if put on a base, take up a 2in x 2in square - similar to how an ogre or minotaur figure would. The only two I don't care for in this tube are the Triton and Mermaid, who are just too large to be used for those creatures and need to be modified, repainted or such into different creatures.

I would say slightly flexible plastic

The figures are small and about 1.5" to 3" H- not recommended for children under 3 years of age.
