Q: My door is 1-3/4 wide . Can you slide on the bottom of the door , or take door off and place it under the door and hit it down with a rubber hammer?

I found that it was too tight a fit to slide on the bottom of the door, so I took the door off and banged it on with a rubber hammer. Be sure too take the door off by removing pins, not by removing hinges. Removing the hinges makes it difficult to align door properly when re-installing. I learned this the hard way on another door project.Hope this helps.

Q: How much of a gap can this cover?

Gap from floor to bottom edge of door?, that would depend on how high up or low you adjust the item. This is a really high quality item and I recommend it completely. I would suggest you measure and cut to length before slipping it on, it's very difficult to work with once it's on the door especially if it fits really snug on the door as it did with mine. Cut it just a tad smaller than the length of the door juct in case you have a door jam the door closes against, that way it will allow the door to completely close.

Yes, you can slide it on the door while it is installed and then you would just screw it on.
