Q: What is the board itself made of? Looks like a metal board in the picture, but maybe it is a plastic?

It is made of thick durable plastic and covered with a thick cloth cover. Very light weight.

Q: I'm a fine dining waiter so i am constantly ironing shirts and pants. is it big enough to do this? would i be better off getting a full sized board?

I would definitely recommend a full size ironing board for ironing your shirts and pants. I love this little tabletop ironing board, as it is primarily designed for quick and easy small jobs. Although I iron all my clothes on it, it takes me a while to iron a long sleeve shirt and/or pants because of the small surface area. But the good news is, the padding is excellent, making for smooth ironing. And, the padding is thick, allowing it to handle the heat and steam from the iron. Overall, I am very satisfied, but for your needs you might want to go with a traditional ironing board.

Q: Would this work on altar cloths already in place or is it too heavy?

The tabletop ironing board is lightweight and easy to transport. It is as wide as a traditional ironing board, but (obviously) shorter.

Q: If you keep the legs unfolded, will the board be stable (with no tilting side to side) and be virtually flat and steady on any suitable surface?

No it will not be stable with the legs folded
