Declining standards of Amazon, have we reached the limits of pooled buying/selling?
On the 13th of July, the package reached its intended destination. However, the delivery agent (DA) did not complete the delivery as I declined to share my Aadhaar number. He left, declaring that the item would be returned to the seller. I sought assistance twice—first on the 13th, which proved utterly futile, and then again on the 18th, which was equally ineffectual, even providing me with misleading information. Finally, a team lead appeared who, though equally clueless, at least contacted the seller to resolve the issue. The seller informed me that Aadhaar was not required as my phone itself could verify my identity. Subsequently, the carrier, Delhivery (with whom I shall certainly not engage in the future), called to say the item would be delivered on the 19th without asking for my Aadhar. However, this did not occur. The agent arrived on the 20th of July, once again requesting my Aadhaar number. This entire ordeal was exasperating, marked by delayed delivery, attempts to infringe on my privacy, incompetent support agents, and several unnecessary phone calls. The experience starkly reflected the declining standards of Amazon. Ultimately, the agent delivered the package without requiring Aadhaar, as if he were bestowing a favor upon me.Several lessons emerge from this episode. The item in question was fulfilled by the seller. In future, it is prudent to avoid purchasing seller-fulfilled items. These sellers tend to employ dubious carriers whose objective seems not to serve the buying community but to extract personal information. It appears as though a phishing operation is exploiting Amazon's infrastructure.Amazon's support system is mere lip service. They may placate you with polished, formulaic responses, but they seldom resolve your issues. I had to engage with support twice within five days, both times unsuccessfully. Only my insistence on escalation allowed me to speak with a team lead, whose assistance was bureaucratic at best, although she eventually contacted the seller. The second support agent provided false information, claiming the carrrier, Delhivery always requires an Aadhaar number to deliver consignments, which was patently false. The lesson here is not to expect the standards of US Amazon. When a reputable foreign company renowned for customer care begins operations in India, it quickly adopts the unprofessional traits characteristic of Indian behavior.False information flowed from all parties involved—Amazon support, the seller, and the carrier. The support team blames the seller as if they belong to two adversarial nations; the seller blames the carrier for demanding privacy information without their knowledge; and the carrier blames both the seller and Amazon, asserting they are merely securing the buyer’s privacy as per seller's directive for delivery purposes. Amazon no longer operates as a synchronized entity with its various stakeholders. The hapless buyer, at the receiving end, finds themselves pitted against powerful corporations that toy with their hard-earned money. As a long-time loyal customer of Amazon, it has been my primary source for books, electronic items, and computer hardware, both personally and for my company. However, the increasing frequency of problems compels me to reconsider relying on Amazon as a sourcing agency. I am often tempted to purchase items directly from reliable suppliers. At the very least, I would not have to interact with Amazon’s ineffectual support system. For instance, my experiences of buying computer hardware directly from Dell have been far superior, providing a buying and support experience devoid of the sense of being cheated, as is increasingly the case with Amazon support.
