Great Printer, Easy USB Setup with Windows 7
Ordered as a rapid replacement for a terminally failed 20 year old HP Deskjet printer, with prompt delivery by Amazon. The main use is for Word and Excel printing. This was purchased with some trepidation after viewing some poor reviews, but it works well as a basic printer using only the Pixma TS3100 series 'Getting Started' guide supplied with the printer, and a few decades of computer experienced. The mains power lead connects into the back of the unit with no floating power supply block. The USB (type B) connector is well hidden, recessed at the rear behind the control panel.Despite using windows 7 professional, the drivers downloaded from internet automatically (via windows update) once the printer was connected and detected by the OS. The only optional software downloaded from Canon was the IJ Printer Assistant Tool to permit print head alignment and selection of quiet mode. I have no WiFi requirement so cannot comment of this aspect. The noise level was higher than the previous HP printer but it is faster. A printer 'quiet mode' can be selected via the 'Canon IJ Assistant Tool', which is effective and reduces the print speed slightly, which is no problem for light use.The scanning and copying features behave ok, as expected. A useful feature is a selectable auto power on/off.The desktop footprint depth requirement during operation is twice the physical dimension of 31 cm due to room required for the paper input/output trays. 10 cm clearance at rear with paper tray touching the wall (paper bent) or 14 cm with paper flat and just touching the wall. The printer can be pushed back when not in use but 4 cm clearance is required if a USB lead is connected. The front paper tray extends 9 cm but A4 paper requires 19 cm clearance as it is deposited over the desk. This leaves a 65cm depth requirement when in use.Ideal unit for light use, and becomes more acceptable for printing from a noise viewpoint when quiet mode is selected. When duplex printing (manual) the paper feed takes sheets from the front of the stack, and prints on the visible (facing) side of the sheet, the previous printer printed on the reverse side.Standard print cartridges are provided, not the small 'setup/test' supplied by another well known manufacturer. With the apparent increase in printer prices and nil/low stock levels (probably a consequence of increased home working), a set of ink cartridges remains generally more expensive than a new printer with cartridges. For the previous HP printer £145 for a HP brand cartridge set, or £62 for a compatible set. For this printer typical prices are £28 for Canon fine standard size, £45 for canon fine XL size, £34 for XL compatible.I have found that with light/occasional printer use, it is false economy to buy 'compatible' or large ink capacity replacement cartridges as they just dry out, or waste ink/time in trying to unclog the heads.

Good value for money
I needed a printer for occasional printing; no particularly special quality requirements or posh features. The printer should be able to provide this. After ordering it about middays it came the next morning. Quite impressive!Physical appearance is presentable; it's reasonably solidly built. Physical setup is easy, just be careful not to touch the contacts and jet area on the cartridges. The printer comes with standard size b/w and colour cartridges; extra large ones are mentioned in the advertisement; they are more expensive than standard; at least one review I saw reports problems with actually using XL cartridges.I needed about 1h to set the printer up for PC and smartphone. Could be done faster with a faster network connection than mine (>150MB downloads) and knowing the network name and password in advance (you may find this printed on the back of your router).Without basic experience to setup hardware it could also take much more time than an hour - there are some steps in the process that can go wrong. However, the setup process is mostly automatised. You can either setup using the provided DVD or using a network connection.I used network setup, downloaded the setup tool from the link provided and followed the steps it suggested. As said, you need your network name and passcode at some point. The calibration process failed twice - I skipped it then and calibration turned out ok anyway, although the printing rage was a few millimetres out of the paper on the left side - not too much of a problem as most documents allow for some borders. One other Amazon reviewer suggested that after several months of use the printing area may get more out of range. Should that happen I may have to figure out how to calibrate then.Printing quality is ok for an Inkjet printer. There is also the usual noise and rattling. Nothing outstanding or unusual.Wireless connection to both the PC and Smartphone worked quickly (after searching for the network key for quite some time). The setup tool basically did everything. The device worked well as a printer, scanner and (combining both) copier.I have not tried any of the additional software packages provided. Probably not needed other than as gimmicks.

It broke and had to be sent back for a full refund
When I bought this I do admit I spent a few hours trying to enable to wifi, to no avail. I was about to give up, when I posted a plea for help on Amazon's Q&A on this page. One gentleman suggested I ring Canon, so I did. Wait time was five minutes at the most and I found the adviser to be friendly, knowledgeable, resolving my issue straight away.Which was, if you want to get the Canon TS3150 onto your home network, to enable wifi printing, all you need to do is press the network button on the printer once, then the WPS button, mine's on the side of my router and then the network button on the printer once more. At this point three bars should appear on the display screen and this means it is wifi enabled. So you can then go to print a document and the computer will say your printer is online. So now it is online, I believe it is worth just under £40. Canon printers are the cheapest to run ink wise. Not only this but it looks good, its relatively fast and quiet, which is all I need for personal use, the ink comes out looking quality and also I like to have the scanning function, which not all printers on the market have (even those more expensive than this one).I think this is the best option on Amazon and therefore probably anywhere right now for home printers. Plus with Canon customer support being fantastic and Amazon's returns policy faultless you can't go wrong. I highly recommend this product.Oh no it broke again but Amazon were great about it, posted a returns label and gave me a full refund.
