a bit dry but a good source
Book gave me good background for my trip to Greece. It got sort of redundant - this war, another war, that king killing some other kings kids, some other king's brother killing him and marrying his wife, and some other group invading or whatever. Sad state of our species - it still hasn't ended. Anyhow, I got the info I wanted out of it.

Greek history and mythology easy to read and understand
Of the books I have read about Greek mythology and history this is by far one of the easiest to understand. I am impressed with the illustrations provided which give a graphic representation of the stories being presented. I was impressed with this work. I found that the research that has been made is extensive and the book is written in an Easy-to-Read prose. There is information in each chapter that I had found new and interesting. Although I had taught about the Greek culture in my world history classes I found much that is new and exciting in this book. It is written for a person who is not a historian to be able to understand easily as well as being a good review for anyone who has studied Greek mythology and history. As a former teacher I highly recommend this book for those who would like to know of the Greek history and mythology.(Greek Mythology)This book presents the Greek beliefs on the creation of the universe and the earth and nature. It tells of the creation of man and the interaction between the gods and man. As you read you will recognize names from movies and literature that have been borrowed. Some of these names occur in every day conversation without really thinking about their origin. As the Greeks have made such an impact on our culture, I highly recommend this book to anyone who has interest in mythology or is looking for an entertaining read. The Greeks believed that the gods had the same weaknesses as humans and acted much the same. Several chapters deal with the creation and the conflict between the gods of different generations. There are tales of the exploits of Herakles, Jason, Theseus and Perseus. The tale of the Trojan war and the return of the Greek heroes after the victory is a series of adventures used in movies and TV shows is one of the most known stories of Greek mythology. It is well worth reading.(Greek History)The history encompasses the time from the earliest settling of Greece down to the present day. It includes some of the myths which are included in Greek mythology and extrapolates from them what is historic. It tells about the society and the interactions of people and the relationship socially of men and women during the different periods of time. The book is divided into several eras including the ancient era, the Roman era, the Byzantine era, the Ottoman era, and modern times. You will find much of each of these times about their arts, their architecture and their engineering. You will read about the effect that other cultures have had on the Greek society and how Greek culture has been made up of the mixing of all of the peoples which have ruled Greece.

The Complete Story of Greece and Its Gods, Monsters and Heroes
It's rare that one can honestly say that a comprehensive history of a modern country is actually a completely engaging page-turner-- but that is exactly what this reviewer can say about this new addition to the Enthralling History series. It's a completely engaging page-turner.The author makes the "History of Greece" read like a great novel with his use of captivating vignettes which drew me in and motivated me to find out more about each period of Greek history and the people, places and things with which the Greek people interacted. The companion volume on "Greek Mythology" was even more engaging with its poignant and thrilling tales of the gods, monsters and heroes whose stories are one of Greece's greatest legacies to the world.A very strong feature of this second volume is the author's recounting of alternative versions of the same myths, and his connection of the stories to actual events in Greek history.I anticipate that this is the History of Greece to which I will often return for a quick orientation to the main events and the major players in Greek history from ancient times to recent events.I can recommend this two-book series without reservation to any reader who wants to get that same quick orientation while also enjoying a thrilling and inspiring romp through the past.

Enough basics for a solid intro
This set of books is great for a chronological overview for the basics. The pictures and maps are great and provide clear citations if you want to learn more about specifics. The bibliography is neatly done and is organized for quick access. Although mainly saying facts and retelling stories, they are by no means boring.
