Surströmming Fillets - Fermented Herring Fillets in Traditional Tin

Was exactly what you think it will be. The can expiration time was the same as when we received it, and was so puffy it looked explosive, so we know it would be exciting to open. Once opened it continued to fizz like an Alka Seltzer tab in a glass of water. The taste? Salty. The texture? Hard Bones and mushy flesh. The smell? Imagine opening a soiled diaper, that had been wrapped in a plastic bag and left on the dash of a car in the middle of summer. For a week. Don't knock it 'till you've tried it...

Absolutely the stinkiest ass fermented fish crap I've ever whiffed..

The can we got was just mush - no solid pieces of fish, just a pink slurry. My guess is that it either wasn’t stored properly before shipping or during shipping. It’s unfortunate because we were really excited to try it.

Awful in every way it should be. Came right on time with no delays.CAUTION: if you’re going to be opening this, it’s of a thicker can so some can openers will not work for it. The smell will also stick to clothes, skin, and other materials so I suggest opening the can with a can opener you’re not afraid to lose. Also: wear gloves when opening if you can, I made the mistake of not wearing gloves and I had to wash my hands ~15 times before I got the smell off. The seller also upgraded my can to the blue one for free which was very kind of them! I recommend this seller and this product 10/10!

You’ve seen the videos. It’s horrible. But not as bad as they make it out to be. It’s more salty than I expected. Crackers help.

Bought this for a family challenge during Thanksgiving and it did not disappoint. Immediately after opening, the horrid stench overwhelmed everyone (reminiscent of dirty diapers). Minus one star because of the high price and the fact that this is absolutely not food lol. I don't know how anyone can eat this.

The can was full of beautiful filets, none of them were mush (which I’ve heard is a common problem with these fish) they were absolutely bursting with flavor. They were well salted so be sure to use a high quality unsalted cracker. 10/10 core family memory maker!

I bought this as a fun / novelty item for the family to try at Christmas. So I understand it is fermented and supposed to be nasty. That is fine so long as it is safe to eat. I'm not sure if this can actually spoil, but when I opened the package there is a card stating that the can of fish is okay at room temperature for several days, but should be refrigerated beyond that. First of all, it took 15 days for the product to arrive from Poland. I'm not sure what kind of temperature it was in during that time, but there was nothing indicating that it was refrigerated during shipping. Secondly when I opened the package, the can was totally expanded outward. I'm assuming that was created by extreme pressure on the inside from further fermentation or spoilage. Again, I wanted to have fun with this knowing it was going to be gross, but I don't want for this to be an event where we all get food poisoning. I tried to initiate a return, but this is labeled a non returnable item. Understandable since it is food and came from Poland. But it was a pretty expensive purchase just to throw away upon arrival. Definitely not going to consume it now.
