Q: Hi, can you extend the enclosure at all if you felt it needed to be bigger? I have heard there are add ons for this range.

There is an add on unit that makes this a two level cage. You can also buy the double unit as a complete set. Search for Midwest Critter Nation Add on Unit and Midwest Critter Nation with Stand Double Unit

Q: Does this require tools to build? If so, which tools?

It shouldn’t and it was mostly true when I built ours, but I did need my husband to use some force to put the last parts of the cage together and a soft hammer was useful. I think it’s a bit of luck on the cage you get and if the pieces are all in order, but you should be able to put it together without any tools. In theory.

Q: Also - can you close off the opening between levels easily (without dismantling/changing the setup). For e.g cleaning (to keep the rats out of the way

Yes, the ladders clip to the underside of the upper level to act as a barrier. We always use this method for cleaning.
