Are the pieces different shapes or are the standard shapes. I am looking for puzzles with unique shape pieces.

The puppy party puzzles are for beginners so they are mostly the same shape. However, Ravensburger puzzles are the best puzzles you will ever find in quality. They are designed for multiple use. If you are liking for puzzles with a unique design try the Ravensburger 3D puzzles. They are unique in design and a little more challenging.

Can these be used with adults with dementia?

I think yes if dementia is just at onset. Too difficult for advanced dementia.

Exactly what size are the individual pieces?

Ravensburger is known to have great products. This was given as a gift to our 5 year old granddaughter. She loves it, but can't really say how exactly big the pieces are. Dimensions are 8.8 x 11 x 7.8" and box states suitable for 4+ years.
