Q: how deep is the shelf to the back?

The cabinet is 5 7/8" deep. However the shelf which the DVD, Blue Ray or CD sits on is only 4 1/2" deep. It does hold blue rays , DVDs and CDs. However, they fit very nicely. You have to adjust the shelves to your needs.

Q: How wide is each of the 14 shelves?

Each of 14 shelves is 16-3/4 Inch wide and 5-1/2 Inch deep. Actually, there are 16 shelves taking into account "2 shelves" at the very bottom. I'm very satisfied with the quality as well as the price and I'm using it just for my great CD collection (I also have 2 IKEA CD storage shelves, but I couldn't get 3rd one - no IKEA in this area).

Q: I have two cats who like to jump on and bounce off of furniture. Will this be sturdy enough to not fall if they do? Thanks!

Shelves are DVD width as is top. Not wide enough on shelves and too close together the way i have them for my (chubby) cats to get on. Top is high enough shouldn't be a problem unless something else close enough to jump onto then from there to top. Seems plenty sturdy enough, though.
