T12-500 Pro NAS - Impressed by TerraMaster
The media could not be loaded. T.L.D.R.- Expensive but worth it. 12 Bay Home/SMB NAS that works for the TECH / I.T. savvy…. Fast, runs different OS’s and QuickSync’s your 4K without choking. Would I buy again? YES.Using the TerraMaster T12-500 Pro in a home lab environment. Was using a Synology DS3622xs+ (12x 10GB Raid 6) for data with a 12900K as a headless ProxMox Server for containers and VM’s over 10Gbe direct connection. The review will be in the eyes of a direct comparison/replacement based on my use case scenario.Using Proxmox, Docker and TrueNas. Nothing against TOS6- it looks great, but I am more comfortable with TrueNas. Started over with 6x24TB Seagate Exos drives in Raid 5- for data, 4x4TB 870 Evo’s in Raid 5- for all Os/app/containers, 32GB (2x16gb)ram and leaving two empty drives bays. Speeds- Building the Raid with the SSD’s maxed out at 410MB/s each drive. The 6 HDD’s ran at full speed and each drive was up to 275MB/s (Synology had 500+Mb/s SSD and 275 MB/s HDD speed). The NVMe slots- I didn’t test them in a speed test and in my use case, a read/write cache setup has little benefit. Data transfer over 10GBe was 850-920MB/s which is the same as the Synology.Impressions- Almost a home run. The case is perfect and glad they didn’t change it. 12 bay NAS with an Intel 1255U, more than fast enough for Home and small business use, dual 10Gbe, onboard Intel Xe IGPu works with Plex and Jellyfin and the size of it is perfect. Bonus- there were No bad surprises. Everything installed without headaches or conflicts. It was quiet. I have it 6 feet from me and it isn’t intrusive with no HDD vibrations. Would I use if for a large business for High Availability and high usage? No.Pros- Speed, tower case, size, ability for 3rd party OS via USB dongle, 2 PCIe NVME slots, CPU is fast enough for everything I throw at it with lots of headroom and lower power consumption (dropped 250 watts between systems).Cons- pricey, unusable internal PCIE x4 slot, 3yr warranty for a PRO version should be 5 year, unproven longevity, non replaceable/proprietary - motherboard and backplate
