can it only be ironed or can i stitch it on to my book bag?

It is supposed to be an iron on. I purchased it to put on my son's soccer bag that was weatherproof. It was hard to get it to iron on because of the material. I ended up stitching it. I would think if you had a cotton or duck cloth it would adhere fine.

Is this large enough to cover a 3.5 inch diameter round patch?
