Has anyone used this bag as a personal item in a flight, in addition to the carry on? or is it considered a carry on by airlines?

I used this bag as a carry on with two different airlines and once with an airline as a personal item, so both work!

Can I put shoes in a duffle bag? Will it stain my clothes?

The duffel bag can hold a pair of sneakers, and it has a separate shoe slot that won't stain any of your belongings.

can this bag fit a yoga mat?

The literature shows the length of the bag at just under 18”. Our mats are about 24”. While they do not fit inside of the bag, there are fixtures at each end of the bag where we can clip our mats. It has worked out just fine for us.
