Q: My desk backs to a wall, but I can pull it out some. How much clearance is needed, i.e. how far do the arms project off the back?

Hello! Thank you for your question! The C-Clamp requires about a 1/2" or so behind the desk to clear. The arms can extend a max of approximately 6" back. This will differ depending on how the monitors are positioned, the monitors can be pulled together without the arms moving back at all but this will also put the arms father forward over the desk.

No. This type will only hold side by side, with a monitor that has the holding bracket at the bottom.
