Why is Burma not called Myanmar?

The very short answer is that we use "Burma" because that's the name used by the USA and UK, neither of whom recognised the military junta that decreed the name should be changed to "Myanmar" (although the United Nations do use the name "Myanmar"). The formal title is actually The Republic Of The Union Of Myanmar! In fact, it's really quite complicated in terms of the naming - in the country itself, they have 2 names that are commonly use... Myanma and Bama. Myanma is the literary name of the country whereas Bama is the spoken name and more colloquial version - the literary/spoken diffferences are fundamental to the country's language. The military junta decided to change the English name for the country to Myanma - they added an extra "r" to try to make it be pronounced more accurately - yet they didnt change the official name of the country in Burmese. Opposition parties (and human rights groups) believe renaming it to Myanmar is disrespectful of minorities who don't speak Burmese and it should have been left as Burma/Bama. Finally, it's worth pointing out that in the country itself you will find both names used and nobody really cares which one you use... there really is no right or wrong name in this case!
