Is this game still fun for children to play with parents if there are no siblings around or friends on hand? Are siblings/friends required?

This game is definitely fun for a child and adult to play together. I played it for years with my now seven-year-old. Now I also play it with my three-year-old. When the older child is home, she helps the younger one with thoughtful encouragement.

We own Count your Chickens. What are the differences?

We don't own Count your Chickens, so I'm not sure what the differences are. With this game, you try and get all of the owls to the owl nest before the sun rises. There are different colored circles and sun cards. You are able to jump colors/owls during this game. For example, if there is an owl already on green, and you put a green card down, you can jump the owl and go to the next open green...does that make sense? My 3 y/o doesn't quite get the jumping to move the owls ahead faster, but my older boys do. Not really any counting in this game, so maybe that is the difference between this one and Count your Chickens?? Sorry I don't have a better answer for you! :)

What are some good games to "graduate" to after these games?. Are there cooperative games like this for like 1st and 2nd grade?

I use Hoot Owl Hoot for 2nd and 3rd grade students with little difficulty. Another fun one that they absolutely love is Race to the Treasure. I have been told that Lost Puppies is good for 2nd grade and that Forbidden Island is good for older (3rd and 4th grade). I have not played them myself.

Trying to decide between mermaid island cooperative game and hoot owl hoot cooperative game. my girls are 4 and 6. which do you think?

I'm not familiar with the mermaid game at all. But I adore this Hoot Owl Hoot game! My daughter is almost 5 yrs old and she loves it!!

Perfect for a 3 years old until 6 or 7 year old it could go. Nice for learning colors and counting. Nobidy get upset when we lose because it is a team work, we win together or we lose together.

Different, fun but overpriced!!!

I liked the community game. Does not inculcate competition. Me and my daughter love playing it.... It is over priced though!!!

Good game. Bad quality. Overpriced.

The pieces are made of thin cardboard and can tear off easily in kid's hands with just a couple of plays. Way too overpriced for the quality of materials inside the box.
